5 reasons to hire a personal trainer

A personal trainer wears many hats but ultimately, they will teach you, coach you, motivate you and help you get the results you are after.

People are cautious when it comes to working with a personal trainer with cost the biggest barrier. Or you might feel intimidated by working with them.

I understand those reservations - I used to have those reservations.  And then I worked with a personal trainer, and it transformed my life and has been the best investment in anything I ever made.

So, why should you work with a personal trainer?

1. You aren’t getting the results that you want currently

It could be that you have tried different things, and nothing has worked for you or that you don’t know where to start to get the results you want. Either way, a personal trainer’s job is to get you results. This will be achieved in a variety of ways. From understanding your goals and assessing if the results you want are realistic and if not, help you to set goals which are. To support and be your biggest cheerleader to keep you heading towards your goal.

2. They will keep you accountable

Well, a great personal trainer and coach will keep you accountable.  If they don’t then you won’t see the results that you want. It is straightforward to create a program for you and coach you through sessions.  But if your personal trainer does not keep you accountable and coach you so that you change your behaviour outside of training sessions then you won’t get where you want to get to in the timeframe you want. There must be a level of trust and honesty for that to happen.

3. They will ensure you are effective and efficient in your training

If you took a snapshot of fitness content on the internet you would think you need to be training 5 or 6 times a week.  Well, I call bobbins on that! If you want to spend that much in the gym, then knock yourself out. A personal trainer though will create programs for you that are super effective and efficient so that you can spend time living your life doing the other things you enjoy. All of this will be bespoke to you, in relation to your goals. Your training will be different to the next person’s because your goals will be different.

4. They will provide you with heaps of inspiration and a fresh perspective

The definition of insanity? Doing the same thing and expecting different results.

A personal trainer will offer a different perspective.  And an educated, qualified perspective at that.  A perspective that has got results for other people in the past.  This isn’t ‘Brenda down the bingo’ or ‘Bob at the pub’ and their pearls on weight loss (no offence to Brenda or Bob if you know them). Working with a personal trainer will be filled with ‘aha’ moments that re-frame how you approach your health, fitness and nutrition that works with your life.  It might be as simple as changing the timing of when you eat or getting off the bus a stop early.  It often isn’t rocket science but the view of your world from an outsider that can unlock the game changers for you.

5. They will give you a brilliant foundation from which to confidently take control of your health and fitness long term

A personal trainer shouldn’t be for life.  Unless you love hanging out with them.  In which case go for it. A personal trainer will give you the foundations you need to set out on your own. They should have coached you so that you feel confident in your nutrition choices.  They should have educated you so that you know how to structure and progress your training.  And they should have taught you how to perform exercises safely and effectively.

And you should get some bonus elements as well.

Sessions should be fun and enjoyable – a great trainer will shape training so that it isn’t just effective, but you enjoy it as well.  If you don’t you won’t keep it up.

And good chat.  That isn’t in the job description per se, but when you spend 2 to 3 hours a week with someone you get to know each other pretty quickly.

Additionally, bad dancing and suspect singing between sets – that isn’t a requisite but a natural outcome of sessions with me.  That is my bad dancing and suspect singing, by the way not yours. You might have the voice of an angel and moves like Jagger.

Conclusion

An important part of the ethos of PLAY Fitness & Coaching is your learning and education.  I want people to become self sufficient and confident with taking control of their health and fitness.  Whilst I pride myself on results I’m more interested in where you will be in 1, 3, 5 years’ time, on your own working with the foundations we put in place, rather than a 3-month transformation.  So, I will always be sharing hints, tips, knowledge, guidance, and advice to help you whether we are working together or not.

So here are a few things to start with:

About Katy Harkness

Katy founded PLAY Fitness & Coaching after she made changes in her life, which saw her lose over 20kg and become the fittest she has ever been.

As Katy became more interested in health and fitness, the algorithms shared more and more misinformation.

Becoming frustrated with unrealistic goals and standards being set, that are often not healthy, Katy left the advertising industry where she had a successful 20+ year career, to help create the change she wanted to see in the health and fitness industry and to support people to make the sustainable, long term changes they wanted to see in their own lives.
